Expected outcomes:

Operationalising bioeconomy sustainability principles

  • Generate new and improved knowledge on how sustainability principles (like cascading biomass use or the food-first principle) can be applied across diverse environmental, social, and economic contexts.

  • Clarify future sectoral availability and demand for biomass types to help businesses and consumers make better-informed decisions.

Social sustainability and justice

  • Advance understanding of how to capture and apply social sustainability, especially distributional and intergenerational justice, within Bioeconomy Monitoring Systems.

Scope:

Ecosystem impact

  • Assess how bioeconomy activities affect ecosystems.

  • Develop strategies to protect or restore ecosystems while advancing bioeconomy goals.

Key actions

  • Improve sustainability assessments of bio-based and food value chains from land and aquatic systems.

  • Analyse bioeconomy innovation ecosystems for long-term feasibility.

  • Demonstrate principles in regional case studies, especially within Regional Innovation Valleys for Bioeconomy and Food Systems.

  • Identify deployment challenges and offer policy recommendations to overcome them.

Cross-disciplinary collaboration

  • Proposals must use a multi-actor approach, involving diverse stakeholders including rural actors.

  • Integration of Social Sciences and Humanities, including gender studies, is encouraged.

In total, two projects will be funded, with the European Union providing the funding.
