The District Dairy Cooperative in Piątnica (OSM Piątnica) stands as a beacon of successful digital transformation in the dairy industry. Facing challenges such as intense market competition and the EU's abolition of milk quotas in 2015, the cooperative adopted an ERP system and automated its production processes. These measures streamlined operations, reduced waste, and ensured product traceability, aligning production with real-time demand.
The ERP system integrated order management with production planning, enabling the cooperative to maintain low stock levels while meeting high-quality standards. Automation further optimised workflows, minimized manual tasks, and improved workplace safety. Importantly, Piątnica retained its workforce, reallocating employees to new roles rather than resorting to layoffs.Suppliers also benefited from the cooperative’s digital initiatives.
The eMilk platform provided milk producers with transparent access to quality metrics and delivery data, fostering stronger collaboration and satisfaction. Investments in green energy and compliance with HACCP standards enhanced both sustainability and profitability, solidifying Piątnica’s reputation as a leader in the agrifood sector.
Located near Łomża, Piątnica employs 800 people across two plants and collaborates with approximately 2,000 cooperative members. Despite its growth, the cooperative remains committed to its local roots, offering competitive wages and training programs. In 2018, it processed over 394 million litres of milk, paying suppliers above-market rates.
The cooperative’s approach underscores the importance of combining technological advancements with workforce development and supplier engagement. As automation evolves, Piątnica’s focus on training and health-enhancing innovations serves as a model for sustainable growth in the agrifood industry.
