Osuny is a free, ethical content management software designed by the cooperative Noesya to help build websites with a strong commitment to accessibility, sustainability, and security. Designed primarily for the education, research, and non-profit sectors, Osuny supports more than 80 websites, ranging from universities and laboratories to NGOs and creatives. What sets Osuny apart is its life-centred approach: it uses lightweight, static pages that minimise energy use and carbon emissions. This design makes websites compatible with older devices and reduces the need for hardware upgrades.
Inclusivity is a central value of Osuny. The platform complies with accessibility standards such as the French RGAA and W3C guidelines and helps creators build websites that are usable for all, including people with disabilities. Osuny also cultivates digital inclusion by offering community-based support across platforms like GitHub and Figma. These tools help users collaborate, learn, and co-develop features, contributing to a growing open-source ecosystem.
Osuny ensures secure and private data handling aligned with GDPR, and its technical stack avoids risks typically associated with dynamic websites. Its architecture, based on Hugo and Ruby on Rails, ensures high performance while lowering environmental impact. Furthermore, the platform encourages digital sobriety by regularly measuring page weight and reducing unnecessary content, aligning with Noesya’s broader environmental and ethical goals.
In higher education and research, Osuny integrates seamlessly with systems like single sign-on and APIs (e.g., Pegasus), simplifying content management for training programmes and open publishing. It promotes open science by providing researchers with a transparent, accessible space to share their work. As a platform rooted in the cooperative model, Osuny promotes cooperation by publishing its resources openly and inviting others to adopt or build upon its tools. In doing so, it embodies a digital commons philosophy - one that is inclusive, low-impact, and socially beneficial.
