This initiative aims at the development of a „meta“-label to indicate the share of renewable (or non-fossil) carbon in a material or product, combining the different available options from biomass, CCU and recycling under one umbrella. We call the label a „meta“-label because it builds upon the existing and established labeling landscape of bio-based shares, recycling shares, and increasing also CCU-based shares, and requires little additional effort from companies to receive a total renewable carbon share.
Existing milestones are:
- Internal agreement in RCI (End of 2021);
- Solving of a several difficult questions in regards to calculation of the bio-based share, of the recycling share, and mass balance and free attribution(Autumn 2022);
- Identifying TÜV Austria as best-suited expert to develop and market the certificate (early 2023);
- Signing a cooperation agreement between RCI and TÜV Austria (May 2023) / Setting up a series of RCI-internal case studies (Autumn 2023);
- Setting up of an Advisory Committee for further development of the Certification Scheme (Autumn 2023);
- Market launch hopefully in 2024.
