In line with various initiatives and policies promoting progress towards the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for 2030, including SDG 12 on Sustainable Consumption and Production, as well as measures for social, economic and sustainable development and the decarbonisation of various productive sectors, this document aims to contribute to the competitiveness and sustainable growth strategy of Micro, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs) in the tourism sector.

The document provides an overview of the European Union's (EU) tourism policy, with a focus on the social economy ecosystem. It offers strategic information on the European regulatory framework, as well as on the challenges and opportunities relevant to the sustainable and competitive growth of MSMEs in the tourism sector, not only in Europe but also for Latin American organisations, under the AL-Invest Verde project.

The tourism ecosystem faces several challenges, and the EU has supported the EU tourism community in adapting to new trends and changes in demand in order to address climate, technological and social issues more effectively. To encourage the opening of new markets from outside the EU to the European market, examples of both successful and unsuccessful cases of European companies in the sector are presented. The good practices highlighted in this document underscore the benefits of tourism when developed from a social economy perspective.

Both the social economy and tourism play an important role in social, environmental and economic change. Despite the current challenges these sectors face, which have hampered their individual growth, they could continue to develop together in new business models that embrace digitalisation and sustainability. Given the growing interest that both sectors have attracted from national and European institutions, this document provides actions and updates to support more resilient models of MSMEs in the sector and foster cooperation between stakeholders in Latin America and Europe.
