CURRENT ACTIONS:
ETC is dedicated to raising awareness of the skills needed for the twin transition by upskilling our members and encouraging them to pass on this information to smaller actors in their destination. We are already disseminating information among our members on achieving a climate transition, including by producing a guidebook on sustainable tourism practices.
We are also working with the University of Surrey on two series of children’s books highlighting the transferable skills that young people can gain while working in the tourism industry. Capitalising on the momentum of the European Year of Skills, the first instalments were published in 2024, and aim to show young readers how working in tourism can springboard a career in any sector, providing skills such as communication, teamwork, problem-solving and customer service. This project aims to get children excited about a career in tourism and overcome the sector's negative image that may dissuade young people from choosing a job in tourism and hospitality.
FUTURE ACTIONS:
We have laid out significant plans to improve the knowledge of Europe’s NTOs. During 2024 we plan to release guidelines on emissions measuring and green label processes, conduct workshops on climate action and launch an online platform for our members to share skills, best practices, and climate action plans. We will also support our members in implementing their climate action and circularity plans, ensuring they have all the skills, knowledge, and resources to be successful.
Following the success of the first instalments in ETC’s two book series, ETC will continue collaborating with the University of Surrey to release further instalments.
OUTPUT:
Release several publications on implementing sustainable tourism, including emission measurement guidelines and green label processes.
We plan to launch an online platform through which members can share best practices, data and resources on climate action.
Finally, the book series showcasing the sustainable skills that can be garnered through working in tourism will be published in 2024.
TIME:
Publications on producing a climate action plan and emissions measuring are both anticipated in late 2024. Further resources, including guidelines on green labelling, will be produced in the coming years.
ETC has begun work on compiling members’ climate commitments, with a view to launching an online platform late in the year. In 2025, ETC and Chapter Earth will consider creating a public version of the platform.
Further instalments of the series are anticipated in the coming years. Translations of the first two books are anticipated to be in the works from late 2024 onwards.
