CURRENT ACTIONS:
As a member organisation representing National Tourism Organisations, we are well-placed to provide guidance on implementing climate action in national tourism strategies. We want to use our position as a pan-European organisation to unlock collective climate action by empowering our members and partners on their Net-Zero journey. ETC has recently established a climate action working group called Chapter Earth, which comprises representatives from each member organisation. The group is envisaged as a singularity for ambition in climate action in tourism and a facilitator of best practice exchange.
FUTURE ACTIONS:
We are uniquely positioned to facilitate data collection across the continent. ETC’s new climate action working group, Chapter Earth, has been tasked with revising and harmonising data and indicators in the EU framework by compiling and sharing Members’ data related to climate action. We will also foster long-term partnerships within the Glasgow Declaration Community and One Planet Network, which will include the sharing of data.
ETC aims to create an online platform for members which will facilitate the sharing of data, resources and best practices. This platform could gather climate action-related data from comparable NTOs, allowing for a benchmark research project on European and global climate action in tourism.
We intend to support our members in developing their plans for sustainable tourism development by providing research and best practices, as well as creating forums for strategy-makers to share insights and ideas. We plan to establish an online collaboration platform for members to support their access to information, specific tools, best practice exchange, and knowledge-sharing opportunities to support their engagement with climate action. This online platform will also publish the Climate Action Plans of each member so that NTOs can find inspiration and examples of climate action from comparable organisations.
We also plan to develop guidelines for NTOs to help incorporate climate action into their strategies, including by producing a guidebook on measuring tourism GHG emissions and a ‘Roadmap for destinations towards Net-Zero’ publication.
OUTPUT:
We will create an online platform for members to access data, best practices, and resources.
Release guidelines for NTOs on measuring GHG emission and strategies towards achieving Net Zero.
TIME:
ETC is already working on two of the publications outlined in our climate action plan as of 2024 – namely the climate action plan template and handbook on emissions measuring. The template aims to be published in the third quarter, with the handbook being published later in the final part of the year.
Regarding the online platform, ETC began working on compiling members’ climate commitments, with a view to creating an online platform late in the year. In 2025, ETC and Chapter Earth will consider creating a public version of the platform.
