1) Garden Hotels has developed a Circular Economy project in collaboration with the primary sector in Mallorca. The project consists of the creation of a composting plant on an organic farming farm to which organic waste and plant remains from the company's hotels are transferred to generate ecological compost. This new resource created from the waste allows the land to be fertilised and exchanged for ecological products that return to the hotels, thus closing the loop. At the same time, we have set up a circular economy project for biomass management to create a community with hotel DNA that promotes the regeneration of soils, the conservation of the territory and its biodiversity through the use of vegetable waste as new resources for Mallorcan society, especially for the primary sector, providing a sustainable alternative to burning and the emission of polluting gases.
On the one hand, we aim to reduce the amount of organic matter per stay generated on average in the company's hotels by 10% by 2027 in order to combat food waste. Data 2023 (Garden Hotels average): 0.54 kg/st organic matter fraction.
On the other hand, by 2027 we aim to increase by 20% the amount of vegetable waste that we manage in a circular way to generate new products, avoiding burning them in the open air. Consequently, this will result in a 20% increase (about 60,000kg/COCeq) of avoided COeq emissions.
We could also try to reflect the closing of the loop in an indicator on the percentage of local and/or ecological product consumed, understanding that this new compost product that we want to generate through the project will help us to increase the amount of local product in our hotels. We are aiming for an increase of 2% of local and/or ecological product on average in Garden Hotels by 2027.
2) Data:
2021: 141 Tn hotel's organic waste manged and 104,75 Tn organic compost produced
2022: 192 Tn hotel's organic waste manged and 148,53 Tn organic compost produced
2022: 11,514 m3 of pruning entering the treatment plots for management (shredding and generation of new products: structuring agent for compost, plant compost, mulching, etc.).
2023: 26,245 m3 of pruning entering the treatment plots for management (shredding and generation of new products: structuring agent for compost, vegetable compost, mulching ...etc).
2023: 278.664 Kg of CO2eq Emissions Avoided according to the Carbon Footprint calculator for farms of the Ministry of Ecological Transition (*Emission factors for 2022). The calculation of these emissions is based on comparing what is emitted by the burning of plant remains in the open air and what is emitted by the diesel of our shredding machine when it is running to shred that amount. The subtraction between the two is the COeq emissions avoided, which is a 97% saving in shredding vs. burning.
