Fill Maschinenbau, a special-purpose machinery manufacturer based in Gurten, Austria, won the "Smart Factory" category at the 2026 Factory of the Year competition (Fabrik2026), organised by Fraunhofer Austria and INDUSTRIEMAGAZIN. Now in its 15th edition, the competition evaluates Austrian production sites against the "Fraunhofer Excellent Factory" model, covering operational excellence, digitalisation, sustainability and human-centricity.

The jury highlighted Fill's combination of model-based manufacturing with AI-supported parts and cost-calculation logic, applied in an environment dominated by highly customised, one-off customer projects rather than standardised series production. The company treats digital continuity as its core principle: 3D models created during engineering flow through work preparation into production planning, with orders, models, drawings and tool data delivered digitally directly to the machines, largely replacing paper-based technical drawings on the shop floor. AI-supported calculation models are already used for purchasing sheet metal components, and production planning and operational procurement run largely automated, giving other special-purpose machinery manufacturers a concrete example of how to extend digital continuity from design through to assembly without standardising away the customisation their business model depends on. Hirschmann Automotive, a contact and connector systems manufacturer, won the overall "Factory of the Year 2026" title and the separate "Efficient Factory" category, while hollu Systemhygiene won "Sustainable Factory."
