Schaeffler received the 2026 HERMES AWARD, presented at the opening of Hannover Messe on 19 April 2026 by Germany's Federal Minister for Research, Technology and Space in the presence of the Federal Chancellor. The award, widely regarded as the world's most important industrial innovation prize, recognised Schaeffler's platform for highly integrated actuators designed for the articulation joints of humanoid robots.

The platform combines high-efficiency servo electric motors with integrated power electronics and encoders, configurable with either two-stage planetary gear units or shaft-mounted gear units depending on customer requirements, and was developed to deliver high continuous torque within a minimum installation footprint, which the jury noted is around 20% smaller than the latest comparable solutions currently on the market. A higher copper fill factor in the frameless motor design keeps operating temperatures manageable even at high torque, and the jury, chaired by Fraunhofer Society president Holger Hanselka, singled out the platform's potential to significantly reduce system costs for humanoid and service robots, a factor the jury described as a key prerequisite for scaling service robotics from prototype to genuine industrial deployment. The award, presented annually for over 20 years by Deutsche Messe with market readiness as a core judging criterion, gives other component and machinery manufacturers building robotics-adjacent products a concrete technical benchmark for what a market-ready, cost-reducing actuator design looks like.
