The University of St.Gallen has given its Roman Hänggi Swiss Manufacturing Award 2026 to Endress+Hauser Flow in Reinach, a company that has kept its production in Switzerland while building capacity abroad. The award is based on the annual Swiss Manufacturing Survey, which this year collected answers from 404 people in 388 Swiss companies, so it reflects how manufacturers themselves assess the conditions they work in.

The survey covered a broad group of Swiss manufacturers, and ten of them were studied in more detail before an academic jury assessed five, looking at innovation, economic strength and the quality of long-term investment decisions. Endress+Hauser Flow stood out because it combines a high degree of vertical integration with heavy spending on research and development, and because it treats new capacity abroad as a complement to its Swiss plant and not as a replacement for it. That approach also helped the company to stay resilient in difficult years, which is exactly the quality that the survey shows to be under pressure across Swiss industry, where geopolitical uncertainty, high costs and a slower pace of innovation weigh on many producers. Machinery builders in other high-cost European locations face a very similar squeeze, so the case is interesting well beyond Switzerland: it shows that a company can stay competitive by investing steadily in its home base and in its own technology, while using an international production network to reach customers and spread risk. The other finalists were Nussbaum, Bionic Composite Technologies, DERO and FRAISA.
