Published 17 August 2026 by the World Economic Forum with Accenture, 'Intelligent Industrial Ecosystems: Turning Proximity into Intelligence' starts from the finding that around 80% of industrial data in the EU remains unused, and sets out a practical framework for turning cross-company data collaboration into measurable outcomes.

The framework structures collaboration into three stages, building the value case, enablement and execution, underpinned by four foundations: data governance, data readiness, technology and cyber resilience. It argues that misaligned incentives, uneven digital maturity between companies and growing cybersecurity risk are what trap value that could otherwise come from jointly optimising energy use, infrastructure, logistics and resources across an industrial ecosystem, rather than each company optimising in isolation. A case study on the Port of Rotterdam found early data-sharing trials delivered around 5% efficiency gains, with modelling suggesting deeper collaboration could unlock substantially more, offering machinery and manufacturing clusters a concrete reference point for structuring their own data-sharing initiatives.
