The Netherlands' newly established National Agency for Disruptive Innovation (NADI) and Germany's SPRIND announced a joint collaboration on 23 September 2026 to accelerate the design of AI chips, committing EUR 40 million over 20 months to small teams using AI itself to speed up chip design for both training and inference (running) AI models.

NADI, launched this month with EUR 500 million in Dutch government funding as a domestic equivalent of the US DARPA, brings the Netherlands' strength in chipmaking technology, closely tied to the ASML ecosystem, together with Germany's research and manufacturing base; SPRIND's head of challenges described the goal as achieving "several orders of magnitude" acceleration in a chip design process that currently takes years. The project specifically targets inference-efficient chip architectures, an area where current mainstream AI hardware is described as powerful but poorly suited to the task, comparing it to using a delivery truck to do weekly grocery shopping. For machinery and equipment manufacturers embedding AI-capable compute into their products, faster and more efficient inference chips designed within Europe could reduce future reliance on chip architectures developed outside the EU, complementing the Chips Act 2.0 push already under way to strengthen European design, production and demand for critical semiconductors.
