The European Green Pioneer of Smart Tourism is an EU competition led by the European Commission, designed to acknowledge and reward smaller European destinations that have implemented effective strategies for boosting sustainable tourism through green transition efforts. Aveiro, Portugal, is one of the seven countries acknowledged for the 2025 competition. The city is focused on improving accessibility and the tourist experience with innovative green initiatives. These include the BUGA shared bicycle system, which uses GPS technology for route optimization and public space management, as well as Portugal’s first fully electric ferry and electric buses. These measures have significantly cut CO2 emissions and enhanced the quality of life for both residents and visitors. Additionally, Aveiro’s cultural programming, which marks it as the first Portuguese Capital of Culture in 2024, aims to celebrate and preserve its unique heritage while engaging the community in sustainable practices.
