The Travel Foundation, an international organisation dedicated to promoting sustainable tourism, released a case study in September 2018 in collaboration with the TUI Care Foundation on engaging communities in tourism development in Croatia. The study details the methodology of the project conducted in two villages in Croatia's Makarska Riviera, aiming to enhance the collaboration between the tourism industry and local communities by adopting a more inclusive approach to tourism development in destinations. By the project's conclusion, both villages had established destination councils with 26 representatives from public and private sector organisations. Additionally, over 800 hotel guests participated in the new 'Taste the Village' excursions during the first season. Business owners saw an 11% increase in footfall from hotel guests, and 53% reported higher sales, among other benefits.
