In June 2022, Pafos, Cyprus, applied for the European Capital of Smart Tourism Award and was selected as a finalist among six cities by a jury of experts. After presenting to an EU institutions jury, Pafos, alongside Seville, Spain, was named European Capital of Smart Tourism 2023. Pafos' strengths included its active municipal involvement in smart city projects, its status as the 2017 European Capital of Culture, participation in the DESTI-SMART Interreg Europe project (2018-2022), and its UNESCO World Heritage Site designation. The Pafos Regional Board of Tourism overseed this initiative, funded by the EU’s Horizon 2020 programme, with key actions from January 2019 to October 2023.
