The EU-funded SMARTDEST project under the Horizon 2020 program aimed to address social inclusion and sustainability in European cities. Running from January 2020 to September 2023, it targeted eight cities/metropolitan regions: Amsterdam, Barcelona, Jerusalem, Venice, Lisbon, Ljubljana, and Turin, all of which experienced social imbalances due to modern tourism trends. Outcomes of the project include scientific reports, academic papers, case studies, policy briefs, co-learning workshops, and a final conference, all aimed at advancing knowledge on social exclusion, alongside city labs in 8 cities to test urban strategies, policies, and innovations.
