Sopotniki (meaning “co-travellers” in Slovene) is a non-profit initiative providing free transport services for elderly people in rural areas of Slovenia. Founded in 2014, Sopotniki addresses social isolation and mobility barriers by connecting older adults with trained volunteer drivers who offer door-to-door rides. The service enables access to essential services such as healthcare, shopping, and social activities, contributing to improved well-being and community cohesion.

Operating as a social enterprise, Sopotniki works in partnership with municipalities to deliver tailored local transport solutions. The model combines digital coordination with community-based volunteering, focusing on human-centred care.
Sopotniki offers:
- Free Transport: Services are provided at no cost to users, reducing economic and geographical inequalities in access to mobility.
- Volunteer Network: A pool of vetted volunteers operates the service, often building meaningful relationships with passengers.
- Scheduling System: Transport is coordinated through a centralised call centre and booking system, ensuring efficiency and responsiveness.
- Municipal Partnerships: Local governments co-finance the service, embedding it into regional care and ageing strategies.
- Community Engagement: Beyond transport, Sopotniki fosters social connection, reducing loneliness and promoting active ageing.
- Public–Private Collaboration: Sopotniki collaborates with Toyota, through the Toyota GO programme, which provides sustainable, hybrid vehicles and mobility support. This partnership enhances the environmental sustainability of the service and demonstrates how corporate social responsibility can support inclusive mobility goals.
Sopotniki has expanded steadily across Slovenia and has been recognised as a leading example of social innovation in ageing. It not only fills a critical mobility gap but also strengthens intergenerational solidarity and rural resilience. The model has inspired similar services in other European contexts, demonstrating its adaptability and social value.
Sopotniki illustrates how community-led innovation can contribute to socially just transitions, particularly in the context of ageing populations and rural depopulation. By integrating mobility, care, and participation, it supports inclusive territorial development and addresses demographic challenges with dignity and empathy.
"Without Sopotniki, I’d be stuck at home. Now I can visit the doctor, do my shopping, and even meet a friend for coffee. It’s not just a ride—it’s freedom, and it means someone still cares."
