Since 2003, the City of Tuzla and Public Enterprise "Pannonica" have spearheaded a tourism development project centered around the Salt Lakes, reshaping the city from an industrial center to a thriving tourist destination in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Utilizing salt, once a detrimental resource, as an advantage, the project has transformed marshy areas into popular tourist sites, notably the Pannonian Lakes. This initiative has not only increased tourism but also spurred infrastructural developments like road construction, improved water supply, park openings, and cultural events, enhancing both tourist appeal and the quality of life for residents. Additionally, this project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme.
