Two Safe and Sustainable by Design test cases were submitted as BASF contributions to the recommendation published by DG RTD in Dec. 2022. Both testcases mimic BASF research and development activities by different divisions with different levels of maturity. The goal is to test the SSbD framework as proposed by JRC for its feasibility for different research and development needs (iterative material improvement [flame-retardant in a polyamide] vs. new to the world substance development [aroma ingredient for home care applications]). Significant efforts from various experts (research & development, regulatory, product stewardship, sustainability, life cycle assessment) went into conducting the two test cases and communicating its learnings / results to JRC. Along those cases, BASF has actively contributed to stakeholder workshops, consultations and peer exchanges. The efforts will be continued until the end of the announced testing period. Further activities may follow.
