Title of the initiative: iC2050 . Cefic's iC2050 project is a forward-looking economic optimization model that brings a concrete contribution to the EU’s climate objectives and further investigate possible transition pathways for the European chemical sector.
This transition modelling tool allows to identify possible scenarios, including the related energy, feedstock, technology and investment requisites, to steer the EU27 chemical industry towards climate-neutral production. With the iC2050 project and model, Cefic's objective is to add the ‘HOW’ to the climate neutrality discussion. iC2050 helps us identify possible solutions to mitigate the chemical sector's impact on climate, by considering the climate impact of our operations throughout the value chain as currently envisaged in the co-implementation Task Force on energy and feedstock, iC2050 can be used to estimate the long-term needs of the industry, looking at different possible scenarios (high-electrification, high levels of circularity, abundant sustainable biomass, highly-developed CO2 infrastructure...). The model works with four possible modes depending on the scope of emissions that the user wants to analyse: scope 1 only, scope 1+2 only, cradle-to-gate (I.e. upstream scope 3 emissions only), cradle-to-gate + end-of-life emissions for certain polymers.
