France's energy strategy aligns with EU objectives to decarbonise its economy and achieve ambitious climate goals. By 2030, France plans a 30% reduction in final energy consumption compared to 2012 levels, closely matching the EU's 28.6% target. For coal, France aims for a 70% reduction in primary energy consumption by 2030, further decreasing this to 75% by 2035. Simultaneously, natural gas-based energy consumption will be cut by 40% in 2030 and 60% by 2035, while petroleum product consumption is targeted to drop 50% by 2030 and 70% by 2035.
The strategy prioritises renewable energy growth, with targets such as 54-60 GW for solar, 33-35 GW for terrestrial wind, and 3.6 GW for offshore wind by 2030. Hydropower capacity will reach 26.3 GW, while renewable heating and cooling will contribute 297 TWh. France also projects a renewable gas injection of 15% into its network and improved flexibility of 28-68 GW by 2050.
Furthermore, France aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2030 compared to 1990 levels, aligning with EU-wide goals. These targets set the foundation for achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, ensuring a sustainable and resilient energy future.
