BASF and outdoor apparel company VAUDE are using chemically recycled tyre waste to produce polyamide fibres for functional clothing and equipment. The approach offers a new use for part of the roughly 1.75 billion tyres that reach the end of their life worldwide each year and are difficult to recycle because they combine rubber, plastics and metals.

The process starts with pyrolysis, which converts used tyres into pyrolysis oil. BASF then uses this oil to replace part of the fossil-based raw materials required for polyamide production.
The recycled feedstock is incorporated into BASF’s production system through a certified mass balance approach, allowing the resulting polyamide fibres to deliver comparable quality and performance to conventionally produced material.
Beyond the cooperation with VAUDE, the material is also being used in outdoor apparel, footwear and technical products such as climbing ropes, showing its potential across a wider range of textile applications.
