TT Gaskets, a Finnish SME, received a commendation for publishing what Cefic describes as the world's first sustainability report based on the Voluntary Sustainability Reporting Standard for SMEs (VSME), a simplified EU reporting framework designed to give smaller companies an accessible route into structured sustainability disclosure, and for having that report externally verified rather than simply self-declared. For SMEs across the chemicals value chain increasingly asked by larger customers and banks for sustainability data, being first to adopt a genuinely proportionate standard, with third-party verification, offers a template others can follow with confidence in its credibility.

The VSME standard was developed specifically to give non-listed SMEs a lighter-touch reporting option, responding to concerns that smaller suppliers were being asked to complete disclosure questionnaires modelled on large-company Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive requirements they lacked the resources to meet. Cefic describes TT Gaskets' report as more than a formal compliance document, framing it instead as a practical tool that lets the company respond to sustainability data requests from customers efficiently and consistently, rather than compiling bespoke responses to each individual request as many smaller suppliers still do.
External verification matters here because unverified self-reported sustainability claims have increasingly come under scrutiny amid broader concerns about greenwashing across the EU; a verified VSME report gives TT Gaskets' customers, and potential future customers, a level of assurance that a standard self-declaration would not provide. For SMEs across the sector watching the broader shift toward mandatory sustainability disclosure, TT Gaskets' report offers early, concrete evidence of what proportionate, credible compliance can look like at genuinely small-company scale.
