LyondellBasell and Cabot Corporation received a commendation for the Botlek Steam Network, an expanded steam pipeline connecting chemical producers across Rotterdam's Botlek industrial cluster, allowing waste heat from one company's process to power another's. Once fully online, the project is expected to cut natural gas consumption by at least 50 million cubic metres a year, avoiding roughly 100,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually, with potential to reach 400,000 tonnes as more capacity comes on line.

Steam generated as a by-product of Cabot's carbon black production, previously wasted, is now recovered and piped to neighbouring facilities, primarily LyondellBasell's Botlek site, replacing steam that would otherwise be generated by burning natural gas on-site. The expansion involved a wider coalition beyond the two commended companies, including Huntsman, LANXESS, waste processor AVR, grid operator NetVerder, Air Liquide, construction firm A.Hak, and public partners including the Municipality of Rotterdam, the Province of South Holland and the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs, illustrating the scale of cross-company and public-private coordination needed to build shared industrial energy infrastructure in a single cluster. Beyond the emissions reduction, the project is also expected to cut the site's water withdrawal by more than 50% and reduce nitrogen oxide emissions, benefits that extend beyond carbon accounting into the kind of local environmental performance that matters most to communities living near the cluster.
