According to statistics, the average energy consumption in tourism-related economic activities per Million Euro of GVA increased from 1.7 to 2.5 TJ/Million EUR among EU destinations in 2020 compared to 2019.

In 2020, compared to 2019, the average energy consumption in tourism-related economic activities per Million Euro of GVA increased from 1.7 to 2.5 TJ/Million EUR among EU destinations. This rise indicates a decrease in energy efficiency within the tourism sector. Notably, Bulgaria, Portugal, and Iceland contributed significantly to this increase, with values of 8.9, 7.6, and 5.3 TJ/Million EUR, respectively. Overall, all EU countries experienced higher energy usage in the tourism sector in 2020 compared to 2019, highlighting the need to explore more sustainable energy sources to mitigate environmental impact.
