According to the EU Tourism Dashboard, in 2022, the average importance of SMEs for employment in the EU tourism ecosystem was 76.1%. However, there were notable variations among countries: France, Luxembourg, and Sweden had lower indicators at 62.1%, 66.2%, and 67.3%, respectively. This suggests higher competitiveness and resilience to single business failures in these countries. In contrast, countries like Greece, Slovakia, Estonia, and Slovenia had indicators around 90%. This may indicate high economies of scale and productivity for larger companies. However, it also exposes employment to vulnerability in case of firm failures, which destinations should consider.
