According to Eurostat, EU residents took around 92 million tourism trips in December 2022. Domestic travel peaked at 73 million, showing a strong preference for local holidays during the festive season. This surge in domestic trips represented 9% of the total annual domestic travel, which far exceeded the 19 million trips taken abroad. A key driver of this trend was the desire to visit friends and family, accounting for over half of the domestic trips in December. Additionally, Romania, Bulgaria, and Malta had the highest percentages of December trips compared to their overall annual travel figures. For more details, refer to the Eurostat article published on 5 January 2024, which includes links to relevant datasets.
