In May 2020, Eurostat published an article providing background information to quantify the potential impact of the COVID-19 crisis on the tourism economy. The article reveals that in spring 2018, EU residents made approximately 389 million trips (34% of the annual total) from March to June, resulting in 1.8 billion overnight stays and EUR 170 billion in spending. The countries with the highest number of tourism trips during these months were Germany (104 million trips, including 64 million domestic trips), France (73 million trips, including 51 million domestic trips), and Spain (52 million trips, including 47 million domestic trips). For more details on tourism trips, nights, and expenditure trends in the EU during the spring season before COVID-19, follow the attached link to the Eurostat article.
