According to the latest data from the French National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies in 2023, hotels were the most popular form of collective accommodation, with 217.4 million overnight stays by tourists in France. Campsites ranked second, with 141.7 million nights spent. Among hotel classifications, 3-star hotels were the most visited (39.2% of overnight stays), followed by 4-star (26.2%) and 2-star (17.2%) hotels. For campsites, 4-star accommodations accounted for over 39.9% of overnight stays. Most visitors to these accommodations were originally from France and other European countries.
