According to the upgraded EU Tourism Dashboard, as of 2023, the Blue Flag program, which provides voluntary awards for beaches, marinas, and sustainable tourism boats, has granted a total of 727 awards to Spain. This accounts for approximately 14% of all awards given by the program. Among other EU countries, Greece received 636 awards, followed by Italy with 541, and France with 506 awards. Notably, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary, Austria, and Switzerland did not receive any Blue Flag awards. The presence of a high number of Blue Flags in a country serves as an indication of adherence to stringent standards by tourist destinations, covering aspects such as water quality, environmental management, safety, amenities, services, education, and accessibility.
