According to a Eurostat article from April 14, 2023, the tourism sector in 2019, before the pandemic, generated an estimated EUR 572 billion in gross value added, which was 5% of the total gross value added in the EU economy. The highest shares were in Croatia (11%), Portugal (8%), Spain (7%), Italy (6%), and Austria (5%). In 2020, data for around half of the EU countries indicated a EUR 184 billion (32% compared to 2019) decline in total direct gross value added compared to 2019, decreasing the tourism sector’s share in the economy by 1 percentage point.
