According to the EU Tourism Dashboard in 2021, the European Union designates approximately 20% of its land as protected areas under the Natura 2000 or the Emerald Network. Notably, Slovenia (37.9%), Croatia (36.6%), and Bulgaria (34.9%) have the highest proportions of such designated land, indicating the presence of valuable natural assets in these countries. Conversely, Denmark has the lowest value among EU countries, with only 8.5% of its land designated as protected. This indicator is significant for assessing a country’s tourism offerings in various destinations.
