The Austrian Federal Ministry of Labour and Economy publishes survey results aimed at measuring the acceptance of tourism among the Austrian population. This study examines how Austrians generally perceive and feel about tourism, considering its impact on public transport, the economy, the labour market, agriculture, the environment, recreational infrastructure, and social well-being. First commissioned in 2020, this survey was repeated in 2021, 2022, and 2023, with data collected throughout each year. The latest report, published in April 2024, reveals that out of 2,439 Austrians surveyed in 2023, the Tourism Acceptance Index (TA) was 75 points on a scale of 0 to 100. This compares to a TA value of 76 in 2022 and 78 in both 2021 and 2020.

Tourism acceptance is positively influenced by factors such as economic strengthening, job creation, infrastructure development, sustainability, nature conservation, and cultural exchange, all of which contribute to an increase in the TA index. Conversely, the TA is negatively affected by environmental harm, reduced personal safety, overcrowding, and other issues, which, despite the still high TA level, have a negative impact.
