The NSI’s monthly statistics on the resident population’s travel habits indicate that domestic tourism in Spain has shown a consistent pattern over the last nine years, with the exception of 2020 and 2021. During these years, there was a noticeable dip in tourist numbers. However, by June 2021, there was a significant increase in domestic tourists, approaching pre-pandemic levels and signaling a resurgence of the industry. Historically, the preferred destinations for local travelers have been Madrid, Barcelona, and Valencia, attracting 6.4%, 4.6%, and 4.2% of tourists respectively in 2023. The predominant motive for these journeys was family visits, accounting for 40.9% of all domestic tourism in 2023. Dataestur, the official Spanish tourism statistics portal, offers a freely accessible Power BI report. This report provides valuable insights into monthly travel statistics for Spain’s resident population, including key characteristics. (The original piece available only in Spanish)
