About the platform
About the platform
The EU Tourism Platform is a one-stop shop for everyone working to shape the future of European tourism. It is part of the cooperation infrastructure supporting the implementation of the EU Sustainable Tourism Strategy, adopted by the European Commission on 4 November 2026. It brings together tourism businesses, destination management organisations, public authorities at all levels, research and education institutions, industry associations, social partners and civil society. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which make up most of the sector, are a particular focus.
On 4 November 2026, the European Commission adopted the EU Sustainable Tourism Strategy, the next milestone in EU tourism policy. Tourism is a major European asset: in 2025 the EU welcomed close to 600 million international tourists, almost 40% of all international tourist arrivals worldwide. The sector directly contributed 4.1% of EU gross value added (10.1% including indirect and induced effects), and comprises around 5 million companies, 99% of which are SMEs, employing more than 20 million people across the EU.
The Strategy sets out six strategic goals: strengthening the competitiveness of the sector, promoting Destination Europe, promoting sustainable, balanced and accessible tourism, shifting from volume to value, building a more resilient and accessible ecosystem, and driving the clean and digital transitions. These goals are delivered through three pillars and ten action areas: boosting the competitiveness of EU tourism; strengthening sustainability and building resilience; and enhancing international cooperation and outreach together with investment, governance and cooperation.
Flagship actions foreseen under the Strategy include an EU Tourism Observatory, an EU Tourism Academy, an EU Tourism Crisis Coordination Network, a new EU Tourism Alliance, a renewed European Capitals of Tourism Award and the first Tourism Europe Days, most targeted for the second half of 2027, alongside the Common European Tourism Data Space, targeted for full deployment by the first half of 2029. As the Strategy's actions are rolled out, the Platform will continue to keep stakeholders informed and give them space to share experience and contribute to implementation.
The Strategy builds on, and takes forward, the Transition Pathway for Tourism, published by the European Commission in February 2022, and the related experience gathered on the Platform since then. The pathway was co-created with industry, public authorities, social partners and other stakeholders, and identifies measures to make EU tourism greener, more digital and more resilient. It also formed the basis of the European Agenda for Tourism 2030, adopted by the Council of the EU in December 2022. After the pathway was published, the Commission opened a call for commitments, and organisations across Europe have since pledged concrete actions to put it into practice. The Platform gathers these pledges in one place, together with the information, opportunities and contacts needed to turn the pathway's goals into action.
