Commit for Our Planet is an unprecedented industry-wide initiative launched by Cosmetics Europe in December 2022. It aims to reduce the environmental footprint of the cosmetics sector in Europe and across the full value chain through collaborative efforts and actions. Cosmetics Europe has created a framework of voluntary commitments, beyond the legislative requirements, to drive industry-wide sustainability commitments in the areas of climate, packaging, and nature.
Climate commitment spans the value chain to include upstream and downstream activities, as well as corporate reporting. The climate commitment levels range from foundational steps – such as carbon footprint assessments, value chain impact reduction and external engagement – to more ambitious goals such as setting science-based targets and deepening engagement across the supply chain. Partners of the initiative are supported by an easy-to-use Corporate Carbon Footprint Calculator, based on the GHG protocol, specific to the cosmetic sector, that allows them to calculate their emissions to acquire a better understanding of their operations and their environmental impact and then implement a roadmap strategy to reduce their GHG emissions and contributions.
The Nature commitments, in line with the Science-Based Targets for Nature (SBTN) guidelines and across the value chain, focus on the restoration of nature and the protection of its ecosystems.
Partners of the initiative are encouraged to act for Nature within their operations, through their ingredients sourcing and downstream of operations.
Commit for Our Planet provides a guidance on nature, based on SBTN to identify the environmental impacts caused by the sector’s activities; a database on nature-related risks and impacts linked to key cosmetics ingredients, and a standard supplier questionnaire on nature to complement this database.
The Packaging commitments help foster improved and sustainable packaging solutions. They encourage the initiative Partners to join existing packaging initiatives, to sustainably source wood-based packaging, to promote packaging recycling by 2025, and to increase the recycled content of their packaging by 2030. Moreover, guidelines have been developed to provide support to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and other actors of the cosmetic industry to design their packaging to be recycled.
Since its launch in December 2022, 53 partners (large companies, SMEs, national associations, and international non-profit organisation) have joined the initiative. The first report of the Initiative is published in December 2024.
