The Southeast Asian Region (ASEAN) has witnessed a surge in female-led businesses over the past decade, and Vietnam stands out as a country that has increasingly invested in entrepreneurship, with women playing pivotal roles in its transition economy. However, the profound impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on women globally has also contributed to a gender gap in Vietnam. Entrepreneurial women faced challenges in sustaining their businesses during lockdowns, particularly in the tourism industry, where international travel plays a significant role.
In response to these challenges, the province of Thua Thien Hue in Central Vietnam, a popular tourist destination, collaborated with Technological University Dublin and Hue University. Together, they developed the Sustainable Agenda for Gender Equality in Tourism and Hospitality (SAGETH) program. Funded by the Irish Research Council in partnership with the Department of Foreign Affairs of Ireland, SAGETH aimed to empower women entrepreneurs in the region. The program provided mentorship sessions and a career development program for aspiring and existing female entrepreneurs, addressing societal challenges related to women’s participation, inclusion, and equality in local economies.
