The EU Regulation 2018/1240 establishes the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) to enhance security checks on visa-exempt non-EU citizens traveling to the Schengen Area. ETIAS aims to identify security, illegal immigration, or public health risks before travelers arrive. Non-EU nationals must apply online for travel authorization, which costs €7 and is valid for three years. The system will conduct checks against EU information systems for borders and security, facilitating border checks and reducing entry refusals.
