Regulation (EU) 2025/40, adopted on 19 December 2024 by the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union, sets out comprehensive measures to enhance packaging sustainability and reduce waste across the EU. Replacing Directive 94/62/EC, it aims to cut packaging waste, encourage recycling, and facilitate the transition to a circular economy. Unlike its predecessor, the new regulation will be directly applicable in all EU Member States, ensuring uniform packaging regulations across the region.
It officially came into force on 11 February 2025. While it does not specifically target the tourism industry, its provisions will impact sectors within tourism, particularly hospitality and food services. For example, the ban on certain single-use plastic packaging will require hotels, restaurants, and cafés to adapt their packaging and service methods.
To prepare for these changes before the regulation takes effect on 12 August 2026, review the full details via the attached link on the left-hand side of the platform.
