Regulation (EU) 2017/2226, adopted by the European Parliament and the Council on 30 November 2017, establishes the Entry/Exit System (EES), an automated IT system for registering travellers each time they cross an EU external border. Its primary objective is to enhance border management by electronically recording the entry, exit, and refusal of entry of non-EU nationals travelling for short stays (up to 90 days within any 180-day period).
The system is designed to improve the detection of overstayers, strengthen border security, and support the fight against terrorism and serious crime by providing law enforcement authorities with access to reliable travel data.
Although not yet operational, the EES is scheduled to be launched in October 2025, prompting stakeholders to prepare in advance and ensure compliance.
