Regulation (EU) 2019/818, adopted by the European Parliament and the Council on 20 May 2019, establishes a framework to ensure interoperability among EU information systems in the areas of police and judicial cooperation, asylum, and migration. Its primary objective is to facilitate secure and efficient data exchange and access for competent authorities across Member States.
Although the regulation officially entered into force on 11 June 2019, the European Commission only announced the launch of the Shared Biometric Matching Service (sBMS)—the first operational component of the interoperability framework—on 19 May 2025. This milestone represents a significant advancement in enhancing the EU’s capabilities in border management and internal security.
