The latest research in sustainable cities and society explores how urban proximity influences social cohesion, revealing that residents’ perceptions of closeness are just as important as physical urban design. It highlights the need for inclusive urban planning that fosters walkability, accessibility, and shared public spaces to strengthen community bonds.

The latest research published in Sustainable Cities and Society examines how urban proximity influences social cohesion at the neighbourhood level. Conducted by Serena Mombelli, Carme Miralles-Guasch, and Oriol Marquet, this study explores how residents’ perceptions of proximity impact their sense of community, highlighting those subjective experiences of closeness matter just as much as objective urban design.

For policymakers, urban planners, and organisations within the proximity and social economy, this research offers valuable insights into how the built environment fosters stronger community ties.  The findings suggest that creating compact, walkable neighbourhoods is not enough, people need to feel that shared spaces are accessible, inviting and contribute to their daily social interactions.

Key Findings

• Perceptions of proximity are a crucial factor in determining social cohesion, influencing how people interact and engage within their neighbourhoods.

•  Urban density and design alone are not enough to create strong community bonds, how residents experience and perceive their surrounds shapes their sense of belonging.

• Well-designed public spaces that feel accessible and welcoming can enhance social interactions and community engagement.

This study reinforces the need for inclusive urban planning that considers both physical and psychological aspects of proximity. Policies supporting mixed-use development, pedestrian-friendly environments, and inclusive public spaces can help create neighbourhoods where people feel more connected.

Conclusion

As cities seek to enhance social cohesion and community well-being, understanding both the built environment and how people perceive it is essential. This research provides a crucial perspective for designing urban spaces that genuinely bring communities together.
