Microplastic pollution is a growing environmental concern, with tiny plastic particles increasingly detected in water, soil, air, and even food. A recent study proposes a bold new way to address this urgent issue by involving all parts of society in a joint effort to prevent and reduce microplastic pollution. The study introduces a 'quintuple helix' model, which includes five key players: academia, government, industry, civil society, and the environment as an active stakeholder.

Each actor brings vital strengths to the table. Academia provides research and data, governments set and enforce regulations, industry develops sustainable products, and civil society raises awareness and promotes behavioural change. Crucially, the model recognises the environment as a stakeholder whose health must be safeguarded.

By encouraging deeper collaboration and mutual accountability across these sectors, the study argues that we can design smarter, more inclusive policies to curb microplastics at their source. This cross-societal approach is essential for reducing pollution, protecting ecosystems, and ensuring a healthier future for both people and the planet.
