On 24 March 2025, the European Parliament's Special Committee on the Housing Crisis convened a pivotal conference in Brussels, co-hosted with the European Commission, to address the escalating housing challenges across the EU. The event marked a significant step towards formulating a comprehensive European Affordable Housing Plan.
Commissioner for Energy and Housing Dan Jørgensen underscored the urgency of the crisis, highlighting the need for increased investment in quality, accessible, and sustainable housing. He emphasised that housing is not merely a market commodity but a fundamental right essential for social cohesion and economic competitiveness.
The conference featured interactive sessions with Members of the European Parliament, national and regional authorities, and stakeholders from various sectors. Discussions centred on best practices, funding mechanisms, and policy frameworks to enhance housing affordability and availability. Key topics included leveraging public and private investments, improving construction standards, and optimising the use of existing buildings.
This collaborative effort aims to inform the forthcoming European Affordable Housing Plan, with the Commission planning to launch a public consultation and expert seminars throughout the year. The initiative reflects a unified commitment to ensuring that all EU citizens have access to decent and affordable housing.
