On 29 November 2024, Vienna, Austria, was awarded the 2025 Access City Award in recognition of its efforts to improve accessibility for people with disabilities. The city's comprehensive strategy, which blends social, economic, and environmental sustainability, demonstrates how major capitals can successfully incorporate accessibility. Over 95% of the city’s bus and tram stops, as well as all underground stations, are now accessible, featuring tactile guidance systems, low-floor vehicles, and multisensory emergency systems. The Inclusive Vienna 2030 strategy and collaboration with disability organisations further highlight the city's dedication to inclusivity.
This year's Access City Award is special as it marks the 15th anniversary and has seen a record number of applications in the past decade, with 57 cities applying and 33 shortlisted by national experts.
