What is the socio-economic impact of the proximity economy in the EU? The final report for the study 'Scoping the Socio-economic Performance of the EU Proximity Economy' aims to provide the answer.
The study first provides a new definition of the proximity economy. The proximity economy ecosystem is defined as “a human-centric ecosystem which consists of the production, distribution and consumption of goods and services within short value chains, enabled by, and based on locally rooted social interactions within a geographical area of perceived closeness.”
To tackle the size of the proximity economy ecosystem, this study maps proximity economy initiatives across the EU and UK, and estimates the size of the proximity economy across these countries with an innovative approach, based on an analysis of intra-regional trade.
If you are wondering how to put this into practice in your proximity planning activities, the report includes a new monitoring framework for public authorities to use - this is also available in a separate report here. The study also offers recommendations to European, regional and local authorities on how to support the emergence of a flourishing proximity economy.
The study was commissioned by EISMEA and DG GROW and conducted by EY, Spatial Foresight, and LSE Cities. Click here to download it!
