CURRENT ACTIONS:
ETC is a leading organisation in European tourism research, producing several research publications annually. We have already published several reports on climate action-related topics, including a handbook for sustainable practices for destinations.
We also acknowledge that many of the traditional KPIs that underpin much of tourism research, such as arrivals and over-nights, are not the best way to measure the health and sustainability of the tourism industry, so we are committed to looking into new indicators to get a more holistic view. New ways to measure performance in tourism is an important ongoing discussion in the ETC Market Intelligence Group and its Steering Committee, and ETC has already begun introducing more qualitative indicators in research studies in 2024, such as online sentiment tracking.
FUTURE ACTIONS:
We are committed to continuing research output, as well as using our resources to contribute more research on circularity, sustainability and climate action.
We plan to create an online platform for our members to share information and best practices by the end of 2025. Using the data gathered on this platform, we can conduct benchmark research on climate action between comparable NTOs in Europe and worldwide.
OUTPUT:
We will produce publications on climate-related topics, using novel KPIs to gauge the sustainability of the tourism industry.
We will also create an online platform for members to share data, best practices and their own climate action plans.
TIME:
Since 2024, ETC has increased its use of more sustainable, qualitative KPIs in research and has begun delving further into travellers’ attitudes to sustainable behaviour. More sustainability-focused resources will be released in the coming years.
The handbook on emissions measuring will be published later in the final quarter of 2024.
ETC has begun work on the online platform, with a view to launching it for members late in 2024. In 2025, ETC will consider creating a public version of the platform.
