CURRENT ACTIONS:
Tourism as an industry has been comparatively slow to act in addressing climate change, and a lot of uncertainty continues to delay the sector’s green transition.
We see green labelling as an excellent way to guide SMEs in their sustainable transitions. ETC has already released several documents to help our members understand and engage with eco-labels, including a study on European sustainability schemes, a practical step-by-step handbook for sustainable tourism (which widely covers eco-labelling), and a report on sustainable tourism certification selection, including case studies and best practices.
ETC takes a ‘train the trainers’ approach when it comes to disseminating knowledge and strategies throughout the tourism supply chain. In providing this information for our members, they can begin to implement these strategies in their destinations, even by starting their own labels.
FUTURE ACTIONS:
We are committed to continuing this work. In the future, we plan to release a handbook on green labelling processes and organise a workshop for members on the topic. We will continue to share best practices through the ETC members’ network.
We are also dedicated to keeping our members updated on the latest EU legislation regarding eco-labels, such as the Green Claims Directive. We will support them in the implementation of any new rules that are passed in the coming years. This will ensure that strong, NTO-lead green labels are in place for SMEs across Europe.
OUTPUT:
Producing a handbook and organising a workshop on green labelling.
Share best practices through an online platform that will be inaugurated in 2024.
Keep members updated on the progress of the Green Claims Directive and other similar policy proposals, and support NTOs through the implementation of any new legislation when it is passed.
TIME:
ETC has already begun work on developing our online platform, and we plan to launch it for members in 2024. In 2025, we will discuss creating a public version.
Publications and workshops on green labelling will be made available in the coming years.
Keeping members up to date with relevant legislation is an ongoing project. We will offer further support during the transition period if/when this is decided by lawmakers.
