The European ESOP model, which is a social/legal innovation by IED, is based on cooperative and on ordinary corporate law--both of which are available in EU countries. In Slovenia, we have established proof of concept and are now working with the Slovenian government on a law that would give legal certainty and tax benefits by the end of 2023. We believe that the model represents a valuable tool for addressing ownership succession in SMEs, promoting responsible business practices, supporting sustainable development, and further scaling up the social economy sector. Therefore, we are committed to ensuring that this innovation is accessible to businesses throughout the EU. As the inventors of the model and the leading Slovenian organization in the field of employee ownership, we pledge to continue our efforts to disseminate the European ESOP across the EU. To facilitate the model internationally, we are committed to helping set-up sister organizations, providing valuable know-how on client work and policy for the European countries outside Slovenia – particularly in Croatia, France, Serbia, Spain, the Netherlands, Italy, and Belgium, where we are already collaborating with various partners from the social economy. We aim to explore the possibility of implementing the model in at least ten private businesses from EU countries outside Slovenia by the end of 2026.
